# Add funds

Deposit funds that your local AI app can spend after you approve paid calls.

Only apps that can pay need funds. If you use the hosted connector in claude.ai or ChatGPT, stop after your [first free call](/use-tools/get-started/make-your-first-call.md). Those connectors cannot spend a deposit.

For a local app, you deposit a dollar token into your **Assay balance** (your escrow): a balance controlled by your wallet that your agent can spend only after you approve payment limits.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Before you start:** finish [Connect your AI app](/use-tools/get-started/connect-your-ai-app.md) and [Make your first free call](/use-tools/get-started/make-your-first-call.md) with a local app that can pay. You need access to the wallet used by your Assay account.
{% endhint %}

The payment network is **Robinhood Chain**, using **USDG**. Both wallet transactions (the allowance and the deposit) pay a small network fee in **ETH** on Robinhood Chain. Funds on a different network cannot be spent from this balance.

## Steps

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open Add funds

Go to **Money → Funding** and choose **Add funds**. Check the source wallet and network shown in the drawer.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Fund the source wallet

The source wallet needs **USDG** for the deposit and a little **ETH** on **Robinhood Chain** for the network fees.

To find its address, open the account menu (your avatar). Your wallet address is listed under **Robinhood Chain**, with a copy button. Send USDG and a little ETH to that address on Robinhood Chain. If you signed up with email, Assay created this wallet for you, and this is where you find it.

Use the wallet balance shown in the drawer to check that the funds arrived before continuing. Your Assay balance is separate from the source wallet balance.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Review the amount

Keep the default **$20** amount. The minimum deposit is **$5**. Check the wallet balance and network fee estimate before continuing; the wallet shows the final network fee in ETH. Tool prices already include Assay's fee; it is not added on top of the listed price.

Deposits settle on chain and are final, with no card chargeback. You can withdraw unspent funds later; the app says this takes about an hour.

{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Approve the token allowance

Choose **Deposit $20.00**, then approve **Allow the escrow to take $20.00 USDG** in the first wallet prompt. This allows the escrow to transfer the deposit amount. It does not yet make the deposit. It is an on-chain transaction, so it also needs a small ETH fee.

If your wallet has already allowed enough USDG, Assay skips this request.

<figure><img src="https://141356682-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FAhFBOJnejgrUxXsfscIS%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-25227d8571062ecfe681b3ec8aaf4d070fe2ccfd%2Fadd-funds-3.png?alt=media" alt="Complete wallet prompt tracker showing the allowance and deposit steps"><figcaption><p>Review the two wallet prompts.</p></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Confirm the deposit

Confirm **Deposit $20.00 USDG** in the next wallet prompt. Wait for **Deposit confirmed on chain**.

The app usually credits a deposit in under a minute. Paid calls can use it only once the chain confirms it, usually within a few seconds. While it is **still confirming on chain**, it is not yet spendable.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Check it worked

**Money → Funding** shows your confirmed deposit in the balance available to spend. A submitted transaction or a balance still confirming is not enough.

Adding funds does not by itself let the agent pay. You will approve the default payment limits next. If the deposit confirmation offers **Next: set your account ceiling**, you can close the drawer: the paid-call approval also includes that account limit when needed.

## If something goes wrong

| You see                                     | Do this                                                                                                                                     |
| ------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Not enough USDG or ETH in the source wallet | Make sure the source wallet has USDG for the deposit and a little ETH on Robinhood Chain for the network fee, then check its balance again. |
| An amount below the minimum | Use at least **$5**; the default is **$20**. |
| **still confirming on chain** | Wait for confirmation before trying a paid call. Do not submit another deposit just because the first is still confirming. |
| The wallet request was cancelled | Reopen **Add funds**, check the balance and try the unfinished action again. |

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.goassay.ai/use-tools/get-started/add-funds.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
